Situated at the confluence of the Grand and Missouri rivers, the city of Brunswick is part of Chariton County, Missouri. Members of the Lewis and Clark Expedition camped there in 1804, and European settlers came slowly and, in 1830, James Keyte built a cabin in what became known as Keytesville, and founded Brunswick in 1836, offering free land to those who would settle there. The original town plat was about five hundred yards south of its current location, and is currently underwater due to changes in the Missouri and Grand rivers. Its early economy depended largely on tobacco, grains, cotton, honey, pork, and furs. Its first church was the South Methodist, as Keyte was a Methodist minister, and the building now serves as a United Methodist Church. Brunswick is located along US Highway 24, west of Keytesville, southwest of Indian Grove, southeast of Bosworth, northeast of De Witt, and north of Sharon.
