The city of Ballwin is a suburb of St. Louis, Missouri. The St. Louis County community was founded by John Ball, who settled in the area around 1797 or 1798, and founded the town in 1804, although it wasn’t officially platted until the 1820s, and incorporated in 1950. Originally, the new town was known as Ballshow, but it was changed to Ballwin only two days later, and is the only city in the United States with that name and spelling. In 1826, an overland mail route was established between St. Louis and Missouri’s new capital in Jefferson City, and the route, which became known as Jefferson Road, came through Ballwin. The city is surrounded by other St. Louis suburbs, including Manchester, Town and Country, Chesterfield, Ellisville, Valley Park, and Des Peres.
