The city of Auxvasse, Missouri is in northern Callaway County. The city was laid out in 1871 by Thomas B. Harris, who previously owned the land, after the Missouri River Railroad announced its plans to extend its rail line from Mexico, Missouri to Cedar City. Originally named Clinton City, its name was changed when its first post office was established in 1874, as there was another Missouri town named Clinton. It was decided to rename the town for the nearby Auxvasse Creek. John Harrison served as the city’s first postmaster, and was the owner of the first mercantile building in the city, as well as a lumber yard and brick making business, which led to his constructing the town’s first brick building in 1876. Auxvasse is located along US Highway 54, north of McCredie and Kingdom City.
