The city of Augusta is in St. Charles County, Missouri. The city was founded on the hills overlooking the Missouri River Valley, about thirty-seven miles west of Saint Louis, in 1836. Credited as its founder is Leonard Harold, one of the settlers who followed Daniel Boone to Saint Charles County, laying out the town on land that he purchased from the government in 1821. Incorporated in 1855, the town prospered from its excellent river landing. During the 1870s, however, the Missouri River cut a new channel that left the town without a river landing, but with several hundred acres of fertile river bottom land, which still drives Augusta’s agricultural economy. Augusta is east of Nona, and southwest of Matson and Defiance.
