Mississippi, whose capital is Jackson, takes its name from the Mississippi River which forms its western boundary. It is nicknamed both the Magnolia State and the Hospitality State. Mississippi was admitted to the Union in 1817 as the 20th state. Becoming one of the Confederate States of America, Mississippi was the second state to secede from the Union in 1861, but was readmitted in 1870 under the terms of Reconstruction.
