The town of Woodland, in Aroostook County, Maine was incorporated in 1880, and named for the land surrounding the community. As the state of Maine has a law that prohibits two towns from sharing the same name, the towns of Woodland in Aroostook and Washington counties found themselves in court in the late 1990s. As the Aroostook County town had been founded as a township first, it was allowed to retain its name, while the Washington County town was renamed Baileyville.
