A coastal town in Cumberland County, Cape Elizabeth is one of the Maine's most affluent communities. The first habitation made by Europeans in the area was on Richmond Island, which was visited by Samuel de Champlain in 1605, and a trading post established there in 1628. The settlement was attacked during King Philip's War in 1675, destroyed in 1703, and resettled around 1720, becoming the state's twenty-third town in 1765.
