The most northeastern state in the Union, Maine is the largest state in New England, geographically speaking. First settled in 1604, it was part of Massachusetts until 1820, it is the only American state to ever have fought a war with a foreign country without the backing of the U.S. when it fought the Aroostook War in 1839.
