The town of Shreveport, Louisiana was founded in 1836 by Shreve Town Company. It was named after Captain Henry Miller Shreve who, along with the US Army Corps of Engineers had cleared 180 miles of debris from the Red River allowing access to the full length of the river from the city. The town was originally named as a village called Shreve Town, but was incorporated in 1871 as Shreveport.
