Kentucky, the Bluegrass State, was originally part of Virginia and became the 15th state in the Union in 1792. Constituted as a commonwealth, it is located in the East Central United States. The first Governor of the Commonwealth of Kentucky was a military veteran from Virginia named Isaac Shelby. Governor William Goebel, mortally wounded on January 30, 1900 is the only governor of a U.S. state to have been assassinated while in office.
