Located in the central region, the state of Kansas is nicknamed the Sunflower State and referred to as the American Heartland. Kansas was part of the Missouri Territory before it was made a free state in 1861 as the 34th state to the Union. Wild Bill Hickok, Bat Masterson and Wyatt Earp all worked as lawmen in Kansas and it was the first state to prohibit all alcoholic beverages in 1881.
