Batesville is located in the Indiana counties of Franklin and Ripley. The town was founded in the 1850s as a byproduct of a new railroad. There is some disagreement over whether the town was named for Harvey Bates, the railroad's director, or for Joshua Bates, an engineer and surveyor who bought the first lot there.
