Newnan was named the seat of Coweta County when it was established in 1828, and named for General Daniel Newnan. Due to its status as a hospital city, Newnan was not greatly harmed during the American Civil War, so much of its antebellum architecture remains today, lending to its nickname as "the city of homes".
