The city of St. Augustine, Florida, is the county seat of St. Johns County and is the oldest port in the continental United States as well as the oldest continuously occupied European established city in the country. Founded by the Spanish in 1565, it was named after the saint because the sailors first spotted land on St. Augustine's feast day. In 1566, the first child of European ancestry was born in what is now the United States.
