Located on Santa Rosa Island, a barrier island in Escambia County, Pensacola Beach south of Pensacola. Although unincorporated, the area was first settled in 1559 by the Spanish, then abandoned after a hurricane did great damage to the colony. In 1722, a presidio was built at a location near the more recent Fort Pickens.
