Gainesville is the seat of Alachua County, and home to the University of Florida and Santa Fe College. Gainesville was founded along the proposed route of the Florida Railroad Company's line, and named for General Edmund Gaines, the commander of United States Army troops in Florida during the Second Seminole War.
