Florida City is in Miami-Dade County, situated to the south and to the west of Homestead, in the southeastern part of the state. Originally, the city was known as Detroit, the result of a land promotion in 1910, but the name was changed to Florida City when the town was incorporated in 1914. It has a small historic area but much of the city consists of hotels and other tourist facilities.
