Daytona Beach was founded in 1870, and incorporated in 1876, named for it founder, Matthias Day. Historically, Daytona Beach is known for having one of the few beaches in the world where the sand is compacted sufficiently to hold the weight of a car. Until it was replaced with the Daytona International Speedway in 1959, the Daytona Beach Road Course was routed along the beach.
