The capital of the United States, the District of Columbia is also known as Washington, DC, D.C. and the District. Its existence is set forth in Article 1, Section 8 of the Constitution, which calls for a district no more than 10 miles square to serve as the seat of government. It is home to all three branches of government and houses more than 170 embassies, the IMF, and the Smithsonian Institution, among others.
