Located on the mid Atlantic coast, Delaware was named after British nobleman Thomas West, 3rd Baron De La Warr, who was the first governor of Virginia. Its nicknames are "The First State" and the "Blue Hen State" and was admitted into the Union on December 7, 1787. Although its largest city is Wilmington, its capital is Dover.
