Located in the Sawatch Range and Elk Mountains of the Rocky Mountains chain, Aspen, Colorado is the seat of Pitkin County. The city was founded in 1879 as a mining camp during the Colorado Silver boom, and named for the abundance of aspen trees in the area. Its population grew during its first decade, of the 1880s, until the Panic of 1893 led to the collapse of the silver market. In recent years, the city has become known as a destination for skiing and other recreational and resort activities.
