Colorado is located in the Rocky Mountain region of the United States and known as the Rocky Mountain State. The area came under US control after the Louisiana Purchase in 1803 and was admitted to the union on August 1, 1876. Women were granted the right to vote in 1893 and by 1930 the population exceeded one million. The United States Navy has named three warships USS Colorado with the first being named for the Colorado River and the last for the state itself.
