Located in the South Bay region of Los Angeles County, Torrance is a coastal community sharing the geographical features common to the Los Angeles area. The area where the city is located was originally part of the 1784 Rancho San Pedro Spanish land grant. In the early 1900s, Jared Sidney Torrance, a real estate developer, purchased a portion of the grant and designed the new community, which was incorporated in 1921.
