San Jose, California, is the county seat of Santa Clara County and is named in honor of St. Joseph, the father of Jesus. In 1777, it was founded as the first town in the Spanish colony of Nueva California, and when California was granted statehood in 1850, San Jose was designated as its capital. It is called the "Capital of Silicon Valley."
