Located in Kern County, the community of Mojave is situated in the Mojave Desert, which is how it got its name. Construction first began there in 1876 while men were building the Southern Pacific Railroad. It was the western terminus of 20-mule team borax wagon route which began in Death Valley at the Harmony Borax Works, 165 miles away.
