The Livermore area was incorporated under the Roman Catholic Mission San Jose in 1796, and used primarily as grazing land. After the discovery of gold in California, Livermore became a stopping place for prospectors, and named after Robert Livermore, a rancher who died before the establishment of the town. The city is the easternmost city in the Bay Area of Alameda County.
