The city of La Quinta began life in the 1700s as the fifth stop on the route from what is now Mexico to the San Gabriel Missions. The Spanish phrase "la quinta" means "the fifth." In modern days, starting in 1926, the city has been a popular resort city, and one of California's top golf destinations.
