Located northeast of Little Rock, Batesville is seat of Independence County, Arkansas. After Georgetown, Batesville is the second oldest municipality in the state, named for James Woodson Bates, who settled in the town. The town was settled in 1810 near the mouth of Polk Bayou, its previous names being Napoleon and Polk Bayou.
