Situated in the Valley of Mexico, Mexico City is the Federal District of Mexico, and the nation’s capital city. It is a federal entity within Mexico which is not part of any of Mexico’s thirty-one states. Mexico City is also the nation’s largest city, and one of the most significant financial centers in North America. Mexico City was originally built on an island on Lake Texcoco by the Aztecs in 1325, when it was known as Tenochtitlan, which was almost entirely destroyed in 1521 in a battle between the Aztecs and the Spanish that led to the downfall of the Aztec civilization. The city was rebuilt according to Spanish standards in 1524.
