The country of El Salvador, situated in Central America, is on the Pacific coast. The capital is the largest city of San Salvador, and the official language is Spanish. It has had a turbulent recent history, beginning with a coup d'etat in the fall of 1979, a civil war which lasted from 1980 to 1992, and numerous forms of government henceforth.
