Bordered to the north by Mexico, Belize is the northernmost sovereign state in Central America. Belize is the only nation in the region with a British colonial heritage. Its official language is English, although Spanish and Kriol are spoken by its citizens, as well. Politically, Belize is a parliamentary democracy, and a member of the Commonwealth of Nations.
