This section of our Internet guide focuses on Renfrew, Renfrewshire, a town in the west-central Lowlands of Scotland.
Renfrew is situated at the confluence of the River Clyde and the River Cart. A passenger ferry crosses the Clyde to Yoker, and a bridge spans the Cart to connect Renfrew with Inchinnan and Glasgow International Airport.
The early habitation of the area where Renfrew now is can be traced back to the Celtic British Damnonii tribe during the Roman advance from the Solway Firth. The Romans built forts at Bishopton and near Greenock to prevent the outflanking of the Antonine Wall. When the Romans left the area in 410 AD, the Cumbrian Britons formed the Kingdom of Strathclyde, which lasted until 1124 when it was united with the Scottish crown under King David I.
The recorded history of Renfrew began in the 12th century when King David I granted land in the area to Walter fitz Alan, the High Steward of Scotland. This location was chosen to prevent the eastern expansion of Somerled, the Lord of the Isles, and to protect western Scotland from Norse invaders.
Renfrew gained royal burgh status in 1397 and became known as the Cradle of the Royal Stewarts due to its early link with Scotland's former royal house. The Lords of the Isles were eventually stripped of their lands and titles in 1493 due to conspiring with an earlier King of England (Edward IV) to overthrow the Scottish monarchy.
Although the town gives its name to the council area of Renfrewshire and the larger county of the same name, which was used for local government before 1975, the administrative functions of both have been operated from the larger neighboring town of Paisley. Renfrew is now represented by its own community council, which meets in Renfrew Town Hall.
Historically, Renfrew's economy was driven by shipbuilding and engineering, given its position on the Rivers Clyde and Cart. However, the town primarily depends on service sector businesses today, including the Braehead retail and leisure centre. Renfrew is home to the engineering company Doosan Babcock, the King George V Dock, and the Braehead retail development.
Renfrew offers a variety of attractions for visitors and residents alike, including intu Braehead, Climbzone, Robertson Park, Renfrew Museum, and the Braehead Arena.
Renfrew hosts several events throughout the year, including the Renfrew Pipe Band Competition, featuring pipe bands from various regions, as well as the Renfrew Christmas Lights Switch-On, a festive event marking the start of the holiday season. The Renfrew Football Club plays at New Western Park in the West of Scotland Football League. The Renfrew Market and Car Boot is a weekly market offering a variety of goods. Paisley Farmers Market is held on the second and last Saturdays of each month, featuring local Scottish produce.
Governmental bodies, businesses, industries, schools, places of worship, and other organisations in Renfrew are appropriate topics for this category, as are local museums, libraries, art galleries, entertainment venues, sports and recreation programmes, and events.
