Oprah Gail Winfrey is a media proprietor, talk show host, actress, producer, and philanthropist, best known for The Oprah Winfrey Show, the highest rated show of its kind, nationally syndicated from 1986 to 2011. She was born in rural Mississippi to a single mother, and reportedly experienced much hardship during her childhood, including poverty and sexual abuse. She was actually named Orpah, after the Biblical character in the Book of Ruth, but people mispronounced it regularly.
