Best known as J.R.R. Tolkien, John Ronald Reuel Tolkien was an English writer, poet, and university professor, famous for The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings trilogy. He was a close friend of C.S. Lewis, as they were both members of a literary discussion group. He was a professor of Anglo-Saxon at Pembroke College, Oxford, from 1925 to 1945, and professor of English Language and Literature at Merton College, Oxford, from 1945 to 1959. He died in September of 1973.
