Shirley Temple, who began her life as an actress, singer and dancer and later became the United States ambassador to Ghana and then Czechoslovakia, was born in Santa Monica, California on April 23, 1928. She made dozens of movies as a child, and was the equivalent of today's superstar, moving on to more movies in young adulthood, announcing her official retirement from movies in 1950. She married at age 17, they had a daughter, and they were divorced five years later. Less than a month after the divorce was final, she married Charles Black, to whom she remained married until he died.
