Winona Laura Horowitz, who would later become actress Winona Ryder, was born in Olmstead County, Minnesota on October 29, 1971. Her mother is a Buddhist, and her father, an atheist. She describes herself as Jewish, as her paternal grandparents are. She lived part of her childhood in a commune in Northern California. A few years later, the family moved to Petaluma. She was arrested in 2001 for shoplifting in Beverly Hills and was put on probation.
