American author, editor, and poet Edgar Allan Poe was famous for his novels and short stories about the macabre and his mysteries. He was one of the first short story writers and is considered to be the inventor of the genre known as detective-fiction, a type of crime fiction in which a detective investigates crimes, generally murders. Poe was born in Boston, but orphaned at a young age.
