The southern hard rock group Lynyrd Skynyrd was founded in 1964 as The Noble Five in Jacksonville, Florida. They came to world attention with their song "Free Bird." In 1977, three members, Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines, and Cassie Gaines, were killed, along with three other people when their chartered plane crashed in Gillsburg, Mississippi. The rest of the band were seriously injured. The band broke up after the crash, but was reunited in 1987.
