Claudia Taylor Johnson, also known as Lady Bird Johnson (December 22, 1912 - July 11, 2007), was born in Karnack, Texas. Her father, the son of a sharecropper, became a very wealthy businessman. When Lady Bird was 5 years old, her pregnant mother fell down a flight of stairs and died of complications of the ensuing miscarriage. Lady Bird was nicknamed by a nanny who stated she was “as pretty as a ladybird.” In 1934, the very day after her first date with Lyndon Baines Johnson, he proposed. When he became President in 1963, she became the First Lady of the United States. She and LBJ had 2 daughters.
