Thomas Jefferson (April 2, 1743 - July 4, 1826) was born in Shadwell, Virginia. He grew up to be, among many other things, the third President of the United States, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, the founder of the University of Virginia, and a statesman both before and after presidency. Along with his friend James Madison, he founded the Democratic-Republican Party. He was married to widowed Martha Wayles when he was 29, and they had 6 children, but only the eldest Martha, lived past the age of 26. Martha died weeks after her last birth. Thomas never remarried. He died in Charlottesville, Virginia.
