The rock band originally known as Jefferson Airport was formed in 1965 in San Francisco. The band was one of the first psychedelic rock bands, making their name during the “Summer of Love.” They played at all three of the most famous American rock festivals: the Woodstock Festival in Woodstock, New York, Altamont at the Altamont Speedway in northern California, and the Monterey Pop Festival in Monterey, California. In 1974, they changed the band name to Jefferson Starship, and they retained that name until the 1980s.
