Lena Horne (June 30, 1917 - May 9, 2010) was born in Brooklyn, New York and was raised, for the most part, by her grandparents after her parents split up when she was three, though she moved around from her mother to her uncle as well. She is reported to have been a direct descent of U.S. Vice President John Caldwell Calhoun. She dropped out of high school, and at age 18, she moved in with her father in Pittsburgh, where she stayed for nearly five years. She was married twice and had a daughter who became a best-selling author. Lena died of heart failure in New York City.
