Born in Birmingham, Alabama on April 2, 1947, singer-songwriter Emmylou Harris was the daughter of a Marine and a military wife. In 1952, her father was reported missing in action in Korea where he spent ten months as a prisoner of war. The family moved around, so she grew up in North Carolina and in Woodbridge, Virginia, which is where she graduated from high school as valedictorian. She was a performer in Lilith Fair, and is active in such things as advocating the removal of land mines.
