Whoopi Goldberg was born Caryn Johnson in Manhattan on November 13, 1955 to a mother who was a nurse and a teacher and a father who was a minister. Her father left the family when she was young. She is a comedienne, actress, talk show host, and political activist and renamed herself in honor of the whoopee cushion and her mother’s idea that her daughter needed to be Jewish to be successful as a star. She has stated that she is dyslexic. She has been married three times and has one daughter. She lives in a gated community in West Orange, New Jersey.
