Ricky Gervais was born in Reading, Berkshire, England June 25, 1961, the son of a Canadian immigrant from Ontario, and his wife, who met during a blackout in London during World War II. He studied biology in university but changed to philosophy, earning honors in that subject. He is a comedian, actor, musician, and does voice work, as well as being a children’s author. He has been with his girlfriend for 30 years and says that they decided not to marry because they are atheists and felt a ceremony in the eyes of God is unnecessary. They live in Hampstead, England.
