Ava Gardner (December 24, 1922 - January 25, 1990) was born in Smithfield. The family moved around so her father could find work. They settled in Newport News, Virginia when Ava was seven years old, and while there, her father took ill and died of a href="http://www.avivadirectory.com/Health/Conditions-Diseases/Respiratory-Disorders/Bronchitis/">bronchitis. The family then moved to Wilson, North Carolina, where Ava finished high school and attended college. She had three husbands: actor Mickey Rooney, musician Artie Shaw, and crooner Frank Sinatra. She developed emphysema as well as what has been reported as lupus and had two strokes in 1986. She died in London, England of pneumonia at the age of 67.
