Greta Lovisa Gustafsson, who would later become Greta Garbo (September 18, 1905 - April 15, 1990) was born in Stockholm, Sweden and was raised, along with her brother and sister, in what was considered a working-class slum. She became a star of silent movies and then talkies, and was considered by many to be the most beautiful woman in the world. She scrupulously avoided publicity and photographers. Though she had romantic relationships, she never married and never had children. She was a survivor of breast cancer in 1984 and later had dialysis three times a week. She died at the age of 84 due to kidney failure and pneumonia.
