Nelly Furtado was born December 2, 1978 in Victoria, British Columbia of parents who had immigrated from Portugal. She was named in honor of Soviet gymnast Nellie Kim. She is active in AIDS charities and donated $1,000,000 to help build girls' schools in Kenya. She and a former boyfriend had a daughter in 2003, and she was married in 2008 to Demacio Castellon. They live in Toronto.
