When actress and singer Diahann Carroll was born in the Bronx on July 17, 1935, her name was Carol Diahann Johnson. She first modeled for Ebony Magazine when she was 15 years old. She majored in sociology at New York University. Early on in her career, she was cast in “Carmen Jones” and in “Porgy and Bess.” In 1968, she starred in the groundbreaking series “Julia.” A breast cancer survivor, she has been married four times, to record producer Monte Kay, boutique owner Fred Glusman, managing editor of Jet Magazine Robert DeLeon, and singer Vic Damone and has one daughter, Suzanne, who is a freelance journalist.
