Born April 1, 1961 in Scotland, Susan Boyle, who gained overnight success when a video of her singing “I Dreamed a Dream” on Britain’s God Talent went viral. The fact that she appears to be quite plain while her mezzo-soprano voice is so stunning sets up such a huge contrast that the audience went wild, giving her a standing ovation. She was deprived of oxygen at birth, which resulted in a learning disability, and the only job she ever held was as a cook trainee. She dedicated her life to caring for her mother until, at age 91, her mother died in 2007.
